A lot of people think that drilling for oil involves some level of luck, like finding a spot where "bubbling crude" oozes from the soil a la Jed Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies. But the luck has been far removed from striking oil for some time. With all the technology it isn't about finding oil, it's about extracting and selling it. Even the selling isn't left to chance. Once you've extracted your oil you know how much it is worth. Oil is a commodity and the price is set by entities such as OPEC. It, like gold, fluctuates regularly.
